Enthronement of the Orthodox Archbishop of Preshov, Slovakia ( 11.04.2006 )

In Slovakia on 7 April 2006, Archbishop Ian Golonich of Preshov was enthroned. having led the country’s largest diocese, he has now become the head of the local Orthodox Church that is a part of the autocephalous Orthodox Church of the Czech lands and Slovakia.

The formal ceremony, at which participated the Hierarchs of the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, was held in the cathedral of Saint Alexander Nevsky in the city of Preshov (Eastern Slovakia).

In May the Czech and Slovakian hierarchs are to elect the metropolitan-head of the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia. The metropolitan locum tenens for the time being is Archbishop Christopher of Prague and the Czech lands.

Former Head of the Orthodox congregation, and Archbishop of Preshov at the same time, was the recently reposed Metropolitan Nicholas.

According to the data from the Archbishop of Preshov’s office, there are 300,000 Orthodox believers in Eastern Slovakia alone.
